Almost everyone who is interested in Clackmannanshire history has heard of the pioneering and very successful Alloa Waggonway coal transportation system. Lesser known are the waggonways that were installed by the Earl of Zetland and others to transport coal and other goods to Clackmannan harbour at Clackmannan pow, and Kennetpans from Kilbagie. A waggonway ran from the Devon Ironworks to Clackmannan Harbour, and another waggonway ran from the Devon Colliery to Alloa Harbour. Each of these two networks had extensive branches leading to pits at Coalsnaughton, Gartmorn, Gubber Hill, Whinhall and Grassmainston and had numerous connections to the main line railway system, once this had been built.
Eventually, the Alloa and Clackmannan waggonways were joined together, Alloa Harbour then taking the seabound traffic with the closure of Clackmannan Harbour.
Some areas of the track bed around Clackmannan can still be seen - now used as farm access and pathways - as the pathway through Back Wood, around the west side of Kingseat hill, southeast past the now lost village of Westfield, then south to Clackmannan Pow.
