Robert Henderson and Co Ltd

The Mills Brewery, near Shillinghill, Alloa was founded around 1804 by John McDermid, The Mills Brewery had been originally established in about 1804 by John McDermid and by 1825 John was trading under the name of Thomson, McDermid & Co.

In 1830 The Mills Brewery was leased by Alloa brewer James Maclay, who had formerly been employed at J. H. Syme's Hutton Park Brewery in Alloa. In 1870 Maclay built his own brewery in Alloa and he gave up the lease for the Mills Brewery in 1871.

The brewery was then leased to Robert Henderson. It was later purchased by the Henderson family, but Robert Henderson died in December 1897 aged 82, whereupon he was succeeded in the business by his sons Thomas and George Henderson.

In 1909 the was company was made a limited liability company under the title R. Henderson & Co Ltd. The Henderson family continued to run the Mills Brewery until the death of George Henderson in 1941, by which time the brewery was in a run-down condition, having for a number of years previously been run as a virtual one-man operation.

The Mills Brewery was subsequently purchased in June 1944 by James Calder's Alloa brewing concern for £1700 and brewing at the Mills Brewery was terminated, the company having been purchased mainly for its stocks of casks. Brewing never resumed there, although the brewery was used by Calder's for storage purposes. Other parts of the brewery were leased off, and in 1948 a substantial part of the former brewery was sold to brewers Maclays who demolished the buildings in order to build garages to house their dray wagons.

The remainder of the Mills Brewery was vacated by Calder's in the early 1950s and lay empty for a few years before being demolished.
